History of First Presbyterian Church of Monte Vista CO

The first group of settlers on Rock Creek, freighted from Iowa in the spring of 1873. Although, not all were Presbyterians, they worshiped together. This devoted band of Christians wanted a church building and on October 30, 1881, a committee from the group sent a petition to the Pueblo Presbytery asking permission to organize a Presbyterian Church on Rock Creek and it was granted.

Two more church buildings were later built, one on Third Avenue and Adams Street and one on the corner of Second Avenue and Washington. This frame church was later sold and moved to where the present brick Christian Church stands. In 1898, our present stone building was built and dedicated.

We thank God for the faith and foresight of those devoted Christians and ministers who by God’s grace steadfastly persevered to sustain this church through the years and thus set the example for us today. May we today match their dedication and steadfast perseverance to carry on a true and faithful witness for our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, the Head of the Church, of whose Body we are a part.
